Start with the problem you need to solve. An old coating, a raised doorway edge and a rough surface may all lead to a grinding enquiry, but they describe different work. Naming the required result helps a contractor assess the floor and explain what the quote includes.
For local project enquiries, see Sirius Concrete Cutters’ concrete grinding service in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Take photographs, approximate dimensions and the next flooring specification into the conversation.
What does concrete floor grinding do?
Diamond tooling abrades the concrete at the surface. It can reduce raised areas and remove material that is unsuitable for the next stage of work. Removing adhesive above a slab differs from removing the concrete underneath it, so a quote should distinguish the two.
Grinding does not add material to low spots. A floor can also be smooth while remaining sloped or uneven over a wider area. Agree whether the target concerns a local height difference, flatness, surface texture or preparation for a specified flooring system.
A grinding pass is not a fixed depth measurement. The slab, tooling, machine and working method affect removal. Our guide to how much concrete a grinder can remove explains why a high spot and a low spot require different thinking.
When is grinding useful before new flooring?
Grinding may be suitable when old adhesive, coatings or surface irregularities need attention before a new floor is installed. The required preparation depends on the condition of the slab and the next flooring system.
A coating may need a specified surface texture rather than a polished finish. Moisture, contamination and existing damage can need separate assessment. A clean-looking surface alone does not establish that it is ready for every adhesive or coating.
Ask the flooring installer or specifier to identify the acceptance requirements. Then clarify who will inspect the prepared slab and which tasks belong to the grinding contractor, flooring installer or another trade.
What should you check around doors and adjoining floors?
Look beyond the middle of the room. A raised joint at a doorway may be the immediate concern, while the floor beside it has a deliberate slope or a different finished height. Record both sides of the transition and what needs to meet there after the work.
Mark drains and existing falls on the plan too. An instruction to make a floor level can conflict with a drainage requirement. Ask the person responsible for the floor design to identify the intended heights and any areas where removal is restricted.
At the handover, compare the agreed result with the stated reference. A close photograph may show surface texture but cannot demonstrate the overall floor profile. Keeping the target, measurement method and responsible person in the quote helps everyone understand what completion means.
Can grinding fix cracks or an uneven slab?
Grinding can reduce a local raised edge where removal is appropriate. It does not repair the cause of cracking, fill a depression or establish that a moving slab is structurally sound.
If cracking, settlement or movement is present, describe it before work is scoped. Where removal could affect reinforcement cover or the remaining slab, the responsible qualified designer needs to define the permitted change.
Do not compare quotes solely by the total floor area. A small local correction and continuous preparation across a room can involve different removal, access and acceptance checks.
What affects the cost of concrete grinding in Brisbane?
The area is only one part of the scope. Existing coatings, adhesive, concrete condition, edges and obstructions can affect the work. Access, staging, nearby occupants and the required finish also matter.
Provide the suburb, approximate area and photographs of the current surface. Identify thresholds, drains, columns and fixed equipment. Include any specified height or texture target, and say whether the area will be empty or remain partly occupied.
Ask each contractor to separate confirmed inclusions from assumptions: preparation, removal, edge work, waste handling, protection and final inspection. A clear scope makes quotes more useful than an unsupported universal price per square metre.
Also ask what would trigger a variation. An unexpected layer under a coating, an area that cannot be reached with the proposed equipment or a change to the next flooring system can alter the work. Agree how those findings will be recorded and discussed before additional removal proceeds.
How should the site be prepared?
Confirm the route into the work area and which items must be moved. Discuss power and water availability, vehicle access, working hours and how neighbouring areas will remain separated from the work.
Concrete grinding can generate respirable crystalline silica dust. Discuss the task-specific controls, isolation, nearby people and waste arrangements with the contractor. The Queensland codes of practice include guidance on managing respirable crystalline silica exposure in construction.
Ask how the proposed work affects the next trade. Agree what will be checked at handover and who accepts the surface. For more preparation questions, read our concrete grinding planning guide.
Frequently asked questions
How long does concrete floor grinding take?
Timing depends on the area, existing material, required removal, access and staging. Send those details with your enquiry and ask for a programme based on the actual scope.
Is grinding the same as polishing concrete?
No. Grinding removes material and can be part of surface preparation. A polished floor involves a defined finishing process. Ask which finish is included in the quote.
Can grinding remove tile adhesive?
Grinding may be suitable for adhesive residue after floor coverings are removed. The adhesive, substrate and intended next finish need assessment before the removal method is confirmed.
Does grinding make a floor level?
It can lower high areas, but it does not fill low areas. Agree the reference and acceptance requirement rather than assuming that a smooth floor is level.
